Works are nearing completion on the Weatherald
Terrace section of the project. This work included:
- extension of the shared use path along the foreshore as part of the
State Government’s Coast Park project.
- 400m of retaining and reinforcement work along Weatherald Terrace
to prevent further erosion
- a new boardwalk and stairs to the South Port Bridge
- road realignment
- reconfiguration of ramps around the existing Weatherald Terrace
toilet block to make them compliant with the Disability Act.
Following a period of closure
Weatherald Terrace was reopened for through traffic on 24 November 2018.
Safety
The design includes a 185 metre
section where fencing is provided on both sides of the path. This long, steep
section of path creates a potential for higher speeds by cyclists which
increase the likelihood of an accident occurring. The section also includes a safety
barrier for cars which is required due to the risk associated with the steep
road, the location of the cliff and the curve of the road. The new safety
barrier replaces the barrier that was previously located on the edge of the cliff.
With the potential higher speeds and the significant consequences of having a
cliff on one side and the safety barrier on the other, having protection for
cyclists on both sides was considered necessary in order to meet Council’s
obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act.
