We recently engaged with the community on the proposed artwork and Market Square location.

In total, 411 people visited the Your Say page and a further 40 people completed the online survey. Twelve hard copy surveys were also returned and entered as part of the engagement.

As a result, Market Square is no longer considered an option for this artwork. We will now investigate other sites that may be suitable and engage with the community at that stage.

Engagement Outcomes

Below outlines the common themes that came through the engagement process:

  • location was an issue and came through many of the comments:
    • it’s closeness to the river made it unsafe for children who may play on the artwork and fall off the edge of the riverbank and into the river
    • it’s closeness to the playground caused concern
    • Hutchinson Reserve (four people) and Jared Park (one person) were mentioned as good locations
    • Market Square was not an appropriate location
    • Market Square already has many features.
  • domestic violence came through the comments as a positive:
    • an important topic that needs to be more visible
    • it is an issue that needs to be addressed
    • there is a need to have this sort of safe space in our communities.
  • desire that Kaurna elders are informed of the work and its content.
  • it will be used as another climbing and play area for the kids.
  • it would be an invitation for graffiti and vandalism.
  • concern of cultural appropriation of Kaurna design.
  • Concern regarding misuse of public funds.
  • the park does not need to be enhanced by sculptures, already a beautiful natural setting.

Conclusion from the community engagement revealed:

  • That the creation of a safe place to acknowledge, reflect and discuss domestic violence was supported
  • That Market Square was not supported as a location for the artwork
  • That we will identify other sites that are suitable but not in Old Noarlunga
  • When we have identified appropriate site/s we will go back out for further engagement.
