We considered formal names for two parks in Aldinga Beach located on Greenlees Parade and Periwinkle Drive, separated by Pridham Boulevard (refer to the map in the document library).

From 11 May to 7 June 2021 we asked our communities to identify any existing names or suggested names for the parks. We wrote to residents living nearby, and emailed local community groups seeking their input.

We received a number of suggested names, and they were assessed against the criteria outlined in council’s Place Naming Policy. We also considered whether Aboriginal names may be appropriate for the parks.

All suitable name options were presented to elected members in a report to Council in July. Council selected 15 names (see here) to progress to the second stage of community engagement.

From 20 August to 20 September 2021 the community voted for their preferred name(s).

We collated the community feedback (votes), and presented it in a report to Council on 16 November 2021 where elected members decided on the formal name for the parks: 'Kadli Wirra/John Ackers Park' (for the park on Greenlees Parade) and 'Manya Pilyapilya/Jim Jaggard Park' (for the park on Periwinkle Drive).

The names all come from community suggestions. The Aboriginal names Kadli Wirra and Manya Pilyapilya come from the Kaurna language (click on the links in the document library to hear the correct pronunciations). The names mean 'dingo park' and 'rain moth' respectively. The names John Ackers Park and Jim Jaggard Park reflect the contributions of local volunteers to the community. Attachment 2 to the Council report (in the document library) provides more information on these two community members.

We will arrange for signs in the parks display the new names.
