On 19 October Council formally named the park 'Niipu-niipu Wama/Morton Park' in line with community feedback. Niipu-niipu Wama means 'friendship park' in the Kaurna language.

You may be aware of the exciting developments at the Morton Road Reserve, Christie Downs, including a new skate park and the development of the Morton Road Sports and Community Hub.

We also sought ideas from the community on a formal name for the park. Your suggestions were collated and were shortlisted by Council:

  • Morton Park
  • Niipu-niipu Wama
  • Bob Mansfield Park
  • Festival Park
  • Friendship Park
  • Julia Gillard Park.

More information on each name is available here.

From 5 August to 20 September the community voted for their preferred name(s). Votes were collated and presented to Council in a report on 19 October where elected members decided on the park name. Council decided on the dual name 'Niipu-niipu Wama/Morton Park' for the park to recognise the communities' top two name preferences. Niipu-niipu Wama means 'friendship park' in the Kaurna language, and this came from a community suggestion.

We will celebrate the opening of the park on Saturday, 30 October at 11am and we would love you to join us. Come and try tennis, football, skating and basketball, and enjoy a sausage sizzle.
