Consultation has concluded

A decision has been made not to rename The Arts Centre, Port Noarlunga to the Gilbert Arts Centre.

At the Strategic Directions Committee meeting on 2 August it was resolved not to rename the Arts Centre based on community feedback. Elected members made a point of mentioning that this decision in no way diminishes the strong contribution of Ray and Edith Gilbert to the community.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback to help shape this decision. For a copy of the full report including community feedback click here.

Background

From 25 May - 27 June 2022 we sought community feedback on the proposal to rename The Arts Centre, Port Noarlunga to the Gilbert Arts Centre honouring former inaugural City of Onkaparinga Mayor Ray Gilbert and his wife Edith Gilbert.

During the 15 March 2022 Council meeting, elected members moved to:

  • commence community engagement, in accordance with our Place Naming Policy, to rename the Port Noarlunga Institute Hall, to the Gilbert Art Centre,
  • rename the Council Civic Room to The Gilbert Room.
  • rename Council’s Excellence Awards to the Ray Gilbert Awards for Excellence.

Ray and Edith had a love of the arts and built their family home in the Port Noarlunga area. Councillors were delighted to be able to honour both Ray and Edith’s significant contribution to the Onkaparinga community in this way. To read more about the contribution Ray and Edith made to the community and how the renaming proposal came about, please read the Council Report submitted on 15 March 2022.

The Arts Centre, originally the Old Institute Building is located on Gawler Street, Port Noarlunga and was named The Arts Centre, Port Noarlunga in 1993. Since then it has become well known in the arts community and industry and has established a good reputation within the community and with audiences, artists, producers and promoters.

The outcome of this engagement will help elected members determine whether we change to the Gilbert Arts Centre, or retain the current name.
