Coastal Adaptation Options Analysis engagement outcomes

31 October 2023

Between 18 July and 10 September we engaged with the community and stakeholders on adaptation options for the higher risk locations identified through the 2021 Coastal Adaptation Study.

Through the consultation we engaged directly with 243 people including:

  • receiving 28 written responses (27 Your Say survey responses and one written submission)
  • 87 attendees at four community drop-in sessions, and
  • 128 young people at five workshops.

Across all engagement methods many participants provided feedback that they support council's overall approach to coastal adaptation. In particular participants supported the evidence-based approach that is based upon detailed historical investigations as well as future projections, and the pragmatic adaptation options that will be triggered by future coastal monitoring.

Feedback was received relating to matters to be considered in the development of the Coastal Adaptation Plan including:

  • the importance of properly and proactively considering sea level rise risk
  • the importance of looking after coastal environments to protect and enhance ecological assets as well as built assets
  • the potential impact of coastal changes on estuarine environments including Onkaparinga River, Pedler Creek and Port Willunga Creek, in particular the consequence of a sea flooding event correlating with high rainfall events
  • the importance of being financially responsible and only spending ratepayer's money when required.

Further details of engagement outcomes including the themes of feedback relating to the adaptation options for each location, can be found in the full Engagement Feedback Report.
