Council decision

At the meeting on 16 July 2024, Council considered the feedback received through community engagement and determined to make the following sites dog on-leash areas:

  • Candy Road Wetland, O’Halloran Hill
  • Madeira Drive Wetland, Morphett Vale
  • Brodie Road Wetland, Morphett Vale – amended boundary
  • Hart Road Wetland, Aldinga Beach
  • Blewitt Springs Road Wetland, McLaren Flat
  • Frank Smith Reserve, Coromandel Valley – small portion of wetland and bushland area east of the playing field
  • Minkarra Park South, Manning Road, Flagstaff Hill
  • Pimpala Conservation Reserve, Farnsworth Drive, Morphett Vale
  • Scherer Avenue Reserve, Coromandel Valley
  • Ridgetop Place Reserve, Coromandel Valley
  • Christies Beach Open Markets, Beach Road, Christies Beach – during market times
  • South Port sand dunes, between South Port beach and Onkaparinga River

Council also determined to reduce the boundary of Brodie Road wetland. The updated boundary can be viewed here.

The following sites remain unchanged as Council decided not to proceed with the changes:

  • Minkarra Park North, Happy Valley Drive, Flagstaff Hill – Dogs permitted off-leash under effective control
  • Port Noarlunga Beach, between the most northern point of the beach that is bounded by the cliffs at one end and continues south to the southern end of the Port Noarlunga Surf Life Saving Club rooms – Dogs prohibited between 10am to 8pm during daylight savings
  • Christies Beach, between Christies Sailing Club ramp and southern section adjacent Short Street – Dogs on-leash between 10am to 8pm during daylight savings.

Next steps

Council’s decision was published in the state government Gazette and in The Advertiser in August 2024. The determination has been appended to By-law 7 – Dogs, which is available on Council’s website and included in the register of by-laws and accompanies a certified copy of the by-law.

New signage for the updated dog on-leash areas has been installed and is now in effect.
