The State Planning Commission with the support of the Department of Housing and Urban Development are undertaking public consultation on the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan (the GARP).
The GARP will provide a vision and comprehensive strategy for the sustainable development of Greater Adelaide over the next 30-years.
The GARP will identify where an extra 315,000 homes can be located and where jobs will be created as the state’s population expands. Its aim is to provide greater certainty to community, councils and the development sector on the long-term growth of Greater Adelaide in response to the increasing demand for housing.
The GARP addresses maintenance of green spaces and tree canopies, modernising essential services and infrastructure, recognising neighbourhood character, and prioritising environmental sustainability.
The community is invited to share its views on key priorities of the GARP including:
- The location of new housing and employment.
- How transport networks (rail, road, aviation and port) will service these areas.
- The essential infrastructure needs to support growth.
- Identifying areas that could benefit from renewal.
- Protecting specific areas from future development.
- What Greater Adelaide might look like in 30+ years, and the implications of trends and projections on future planning.
- The potential options for future urban form – including constraints and opportunities.
- The needs and wants of current and future communities.
The Greater Adelaide Regional Plan will be available for viewing from 23 September at regional.plan.sa.gov.au.
Online information sessions and workshops for community members will be available, offering the opportunity to discuss and provide feedback on the Plan's key topics.
Registration for these sessions will open on 23 September via the PlanSA Eventbrite page.
Background
In 2023 the State Planning Commission commenced the renewal of the existing state’s regional plans and prepared the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan Discussion Paper to support the engagement process in developing a new Greater Adelaide Regional Plan (GARP).
The Discussion Paper provided a robust evidence-based document with a strong focus on what the region might look like in 30 years' time and presents key considerations and trends that we need to consider in our future planning.
Public consultation on the Discussion Paper was held for a period of 12 weeks from 14 August 2023, and provided opportunities for stakeholders to have early input into forming the new GARP and to help determine:
The feedback received from the Discussion Paper engagement was intended to play a key role in shaping the future development and growth of South Australia, considering aspects such as future population and employment, housing affordability, and the quality of life for the South Australian metropolitan region.
Council made a submission to the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan Discussion Paper at its Strategic Directions Committee meeting of 7 November 2023. A copy of the report and Council’s submission can be viewed under the Documents heading.
