Background information

The Centre, currently leased to the Hub Gymnastics Club and shared with the 50's Plus Activity Group is a council owned facility located opposite Serpentine Reserve on Candy Road, Happy Valley.

It was built in 1975 as a two-court basketball stadium and extended in 1996 to provide additional community facilities such as a main gym hall, an adjacent community room, supported by female and male amenities (toilets, showers), storage rooms, an office, reception foyer and kitchen facilities. An adjacent carpark including two accessible car parks currently supports the facility.

A high-level conceptual building expansion plan was initiated by Hub Gymnastics to address the high demand for gymnastics in the region, broaden the centre’s offering and better service the needs of its users.

With the support of Erin Thompson Member for Davenport, the state government is providing $3M towards upgrade and expansion of the Paul Murray Recreation Centre. Amanda Rishworth Member for Kingston has also committed $1M federal funding toward the project.

Council has also approved a funding contribution and will apply for additional federal Local Roads and Community Infrastructure funding toward the $5.45M redevelopment.

We have been working closely with Hub Gymnastics and the 50’s Plus Activity Group to design the redevelopment and ensure it satisfies their current and future needs. The key features of this project include;

  • expand gym hall and multiuse community room
  • new mezzanine viewing area
  • new kindergym area
  • upgraded entrance, kitchen, foyer, office and amenities
  • complete roof replacement
  • expand car park and landscaping.
