At the council meeting on 9 December 2025, Council approved to undertake community engagement seeking community feedback on the proposal to rename the Aldinga Sports Park. All feedback will be considered at the April 2026 Council meeting.

Background

The Aldinga Soldiers War Memorial was originally located near St Ann’s Church, between Main South Road and Stonehouse Lane, Aldinga, and commemorated local service men and women who lost their lives in World War I and World War II.

The duplication of Main South Road required the memorial to be relocated, creating an opportunity to establish a new, more appropriate memorial space to honour local service men and women. The relocation was supported by members of the local community to improve safety, accessibility and the long-term protection of the memorial.

A community working group was established to guide the development of the new memorial space. The group included local veterans, relatives of Glen Crisp (named on the monument), and sporting and other community representatives. The memorial has now been established at Aldinga Sports Park as part of the Masterplan project and commemorates local returned service men and women from all conflicts, including First Nations people who have served.

Council also intends to amend its Community Land Management Plan for Culturally Significant Areas to include the portion of land containing the relocated war memorial, consistent with similar developments on community land.

Your feedback counts

Your feedback will help inform council's decision. See below for what you can and can't influence and then complete the survey. It only takes a few minutes.

  • Whether the Aldinga Sports Park name should be changed to better reflect the inclusion of the memorial
  • Your level of support for the proposed name Aldinga Memorial Sports Park (or a similar option that includes the memorial)
  • Any considerations or feedback about how the name reflects commemoration, place, and community identity

  • The location of the memorial, which has already been established at Aldinga Sports Park
  • Including the portion of land the war memorial sits on into the Community Land Management Plan for Culturally Significant Areas
  • the final decision which will be made by Council after considering community feedback
