Community Engagement Highlights

Council, after reviewing all community feedback decided to rename the multi-use facility to Aldinga Memorial Sports Complex at the 28 April 2026 Council meeting. Here's what we heard and what happens next.

Of the 36 contributions, 22 supported the proposed name change, 9 did not support the change and 5 suggested an alternative name.

Some of those not supporting the name change thought it was unnecessary and council should focus on core activities, and some felt the memorial and sports park should remain separate. Other comments suggested the existing name is sufficient, discomfort with associating war with a recreational facility and a Kaurna name instead of introducing a memorial reference.

Alternative name suggestions included:

  • Aldinga Memorial Sports Complex
  • Aldinga Soldiers War Memorial Sports Park
  • Aldinga Mukapaanthi Community Park
  • Aldinga Memorial Complex
  • Aldinga Memorial Park

Some respondents recognised that the term 'Complex' aligns with the name of councils other existing multi-use facilities.

Many comments in support of the name change expressed the change is a way to acknowledge or honour service personnel and encourage remembrance.

What happens now?

We will publish a formal notice and write to stakeholders advising them of the new name. We will also update the name on the two signs on Port Road and on online maps.
