Background
We have been seeking your feedback on a proposal by Khai’s family and friends to install a memorial mural on the east facing wall of the Seaford amenities block on the Esplanade at Seaford.
Khai, a 15-year-old local young person, tragically passed away following a shark attack on the Yorke Peninsula in December 2023 while on holiday with his family.
Council did previously engage with the community in June 2024 for a mural proposal on the west facing wall, however we received new information from Khai’s family about this project at that time.
Following discussions with Khai’s family, council is now proposing to put this work on the east wall facing the Esplanade, which is more prominent and visible to the public. There is currently a mural painted by artist Paul Alexander on this wall, which is 10 years old and reaching its end of life. The proposal for this new mural will replace the existing artwork.
Local artist Mike Sander has offered his labour and materials for free as a gesture to support the family and community in remembering Khai.
The proposal includes a mural of Khai surfing a wave, alongside a large portrait, plus a plaque which honours all surfers, alongside Khai. An indicative concept is shown below.

Indicative image of proposed artwork
It is proposed that the artwork will include Khai giving the 'shaka' hand gesture, which is popular in surf culture.
