What's happening?

Immediate on-site works are being undertaken on the clifftop near Seascape View, Sellicks Beach to protect a particularly sensitive area of ahead of the Easter break.

This includes the careful placement of boulders, logs and vegetation thatching to prevent damage.

No excavation work is required or proposed and there will be minimal impact with the surrounding environment.

You can view the concept plan for these initial works.

We acknowledge these changes will impact how the area is currently used, particularly for riders and local families.

Additional works to protect other areas will be undertaken over time.

Why is this happening now?

We have been working with Kaurna Traditional Owners regarding the informal bike tracks and jumps at Sellicks Beach.

The clifftop near Seascape View has been increasingly used as an informal bike-riding spot for local young people over the years, but it’s also a site that the City of Onkaparinga has a responsibility to protect.

Council is responsible for management of this land and has a legislative responsibility to protect cultural heritage pursuant to the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988.

A range of measures have been implemented to manage use of the Sellicks foreshore area during the review period, including signage, educational videos, engagement with local schools and riders, and ongoing collaboration with Kaurna Traditional Owners.

Increased riding activity, combined with natural erosion and stormwater runoff, is resulting in significant impacts to this culturally important area.

Out of respect for Traditional Owners – whose stories, connections and traditions go back thousands of years – we need to act to protect these places before it’s too late.

What's next?

We recognise the strong community connection to the bike paths and jumps, which have been developed and used for more than 30 years.

The City of Onkaparinga Council will soon engage with the Sellicks Beach community, including riders, to explore opportunities to co-design new jumps and paths at an alternative location in the local area.

We want to support the community to shape their riding experience while working together to conserve important sites for future generations.

Engagement will include a community drop-in session, targeted discussions with riders to understand what they value most about the existing paths, and online opportunities to provide feedback.
