It has been identified that Christies Beach is at the exploration stage of the tourism destination life cycle (ie. low visitation, minimal tourism infrastructure, and more locally oriented). By undertaking a tourism focused place-building approach, it will identify and realise the untapped potential, as well as build strong foundations to enable Beach Road, Christies Beach to emerge as a tourism destination.

Council has received $500,000 through State government’s Community Infrastructure Grant Program for streetscape improvements of Beach Road, as prioritised in the 2022-24 Beach Road Christies Beach Action Plan.

The action plan was developed by Council through consultation with local businesses, landlords and visitors. The Christies Beach Business and Tourism Association (CBBTA) has been regularly updated as a key project stakeholder. It recognised the section of Beach Road between Overland Terrace to the Esplanade as a tourism hub that would benefit most from street enhancements. With the funding available, the focus has been to identify several nodal points within the hub that would benefit most from street enhancement initiatives, including the protuberances, public seating, landscaping, paving, street trees, lighting and public art.

The draft Beach Road Western Precinct Streetscape Plan has been designed to prioritise several focal points (nodes) along the western section of Beach Road to provide:

  • Increased outdoor dining area
  • Increased opportunities to pause, sit and rest along the street
  • Improved visual amenity
  • Greening through native coastal garden beds
  • Public art to surprise and delight
