Serpentine Reserve BMX track temporarily closed

Serpentine Reserve BMX track is temporarily closed after building materials removed from the site yesterday, and tested today, were today found to contain asbestos.

The City of Onkaparinga responded immediately yesterday to organise its collection by the council’s licenced asbestos assessor and removalist, after a quick-thinking resident notified the council of building material fragments found near the BMX track.

It’s unknown how the material came to be at the site, though it’s thought to potentially be long-ago illegally dumped material that was unearthed by contractors ahead of works to improve the bike jumps.

Council and community works to shape, improve and maintain the site’s dirt bike jumps – through the council’s Community Dig Days initiative – took place on Tuesday 16 December, but the materials weren’t identified at that time.

Soil for the dig day was tested before being delivered to the site, and the test results advised the material was suitable for use.

The council has temporarily closed the BMX track with bunting today, and is installing signage out of an abundance of caution. Temporary fencing will be installed onsite on Wednesday 24 December. The council is also reaching out to participants involved in the 16 December dig day.

The EPA is aware of the situation, and council will share more information as the remediation works progress.

Your jumps, your way!

The Dirt Jumps Community Dig Days are a 12-month pilot program that gives dirt jump riders and the local community the opportunity to help shape and maintain dirt jump areas at two key locations.

📍 Serpentine Reserve, O’Halloran Hill

📍 The Quarry, Seaford

We are working with local riders to improve and maintain dirt jump tracks and we need your input! This is your chance to help design and build the jumps you ride!

How can you be part of it?

  • Tell us what you think!
  • Vote on changes you want to see
  • Get down and dirty on Dig Days
  • Help maintain your dirt jump space!

Find out more about how to get involved and stay up to date by visiting the project page for each location below.

💬 Have your say now! We are currently gathering your feedback on the draft designs, then you’ll even get a chance to help build and maintain the jumps at the Dirt Jump Community Dig Day!

Don’t miss out—this is your chance to make an impact. Tell your mates and let’s make this happen!

IMPORTANT NOTE

Your feedback will help decide how these dirt jumps are looked after and improved during this pilot program. But we want to make sure you know what this project is about.

This program is all about fixing and maintaining the jumps that are already here. It’s NOT a full rebuild or upgrade. So:

  • No new jumps will be added, but we might reshape or adjust the current ones to make them safer and better to ride.
  • There will not be any new extras like benches, lights, or toilets.
  • No trees will be removed.
  • All changes will stay within the current dirt jump area – no big changes or extensions.
