Background

Hopgood Theatre opened in 1985 and is an integral part of the regional arts community, providing an accessible space for local emerging artists to perform, as well as bringing national and international performances to the Fleurieu region.

The main theatre has one of the largest seating capacities of any theatre in suburban Adelaide, boasting a 492-seat capacity. Thousands of people attend performances at the Hopgood Theatre each year. It’s the only professional performing arts centre of this size within the City of Onkaparinga (approximate population of 175,000) and the broader Fleurieu Peninsula (approximate population of 50,000).

The community has a longstanding and strong connection with Hopgood Theatre which provides vibrancy and activates Ramsay Place and the broader Noarlunga Centre during day and night.

The future of the Hopgood Theatre has been assured through community and council advocacy efforts which have resulted in the state government committing to a 25-year lease agreement with City of Onkaparinga and includes a state government grant of $6 million to refurbish Hopgood Theatre.

At the end of 2022 we sought community feedback on the future opportunities for Hopgood Theatre and what programs and services are desired to ensure the longevity of this much-loved performing arts facility. Consultation closed on 3 January 2023.
