Council is committed to the conservation of our built heritage, which includes statutory protection measures such as local heritage place listing under the Planning and Design Code and also provides support to heritage property owners through advice.

Local Heritage listing of places is an important part of heritage conservation and helps to ensure that our past is preserved to tell the story to our future generations.

Between 2020 and 2022, we undertook a comprehensive city-wide heritage review of our local heritage places, the first time this had been done since 1997. As part of the Local Heritage Places review, a Thematic Framework was developed, with the themes used in the assessment of the nominated places.

Following the review, Council endorsed the preparation of the Proposal to Initiate a Code Amendment as the first step in formally amending the Planning and Design Code. More information about the review can be found on the Review of Local Heritage Places Your Say page.

The Proposal to Initiate a Code Amendment was submitted to the Minister for Planning in July 2023, and approval granted in September 2024.

The Code Amendment includes a total of 89 places made up of:

  • Two Representative Buildings recommended for upgrading to Local Heritage Places
  • 43 places recommended for listing as Local Heritage Places
  • 20 Local Heritage Places recommended for removal
  • 24 Local Heritage Places recommended for an amendment.

We are now preparing to seek approval from Council to begin community consultation on the Code Amendment in early 2025.

Early engagement has been undertaken with owners and occupiers of places recommended for a Code Amendment and they will have the opportunity to provide a submission during the consultation period.
