What’s happening?

We are considering several options for a possible motorised vessel exclusion zone at Aldinga Beach and/or Sellicks Beach. Have Your Say to share your opinion of these options.

Here’s a breakdown of the key information and options for you to consider.

What is included?

MOTORISED VESSELS

A motorised vessel is any boat or vessel (including PWCs) that is being propelled by an engine (irrespective of size), whether or not the engine is the main means of propulsion. A sailing boat being propelled by an auxiliary engine is regarded as a motorboat or motorised vessel.

Personal Watercraft (PWC) is a device that: is propelled by a motor; has a fully enclosed hull; is designed not to retain water if capsized; and is operated by a person who sits astride it or stands or kneels on it. PWC are often more commonly known by their brand names, including Jet Ski®, Sea-Doo®, and WaveRunner®.

What is not included?

NON-MOTORISED VESSELS

This survey does not consider non-motorised vessels such as kayaks, surfboards, sailboards, paddleboards etc.

Our role and authority

  • What we can do: We can control where boats are launched and retrieved along the beach.
  • What we can’t do alone: For any restrictions on motorised vessels in certain water areas, we must work with Marine Safety SA under the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT).

Why is a vessel exclusion zone being considered?

  • Safety concerns: Motorised watercraft (including jet skis) moving close to shore can pose a safety risk for swimmers.
  • Community feedback: We received a petition from community members who requested a ban of jet skis at various beaches along the coast.

Options proposed for exclusion zone

To gather input, we are considering several options for the exclusion zone that may become a motorised vessel restricted area. Each option represents different areas along the Aldinga and Sellicks Beach coastline, defined on the attached map. Any exclusion zone would mean a person must not operate a vessel fitted with an engine in the specified waters:

  • Option A: The body of water highlighted in gold on the map, 200m seaward from the low water mark from Morgan Street and Norman Road, Aldinga Beach.
  • Option B: The body of water highlighted in red on the map, 200m from the low water mark between Dingo Road and Norman Road, Aldinga Beach.
  • Option C: The body of water highlighted in blue on the map, 200m from the low water mark from Norman Road, Aldinga Beach to Sellicks Beach Road, Sellick Beach.
  • Option D: All the above options.
  • Option E: None of the above options, maintain current permissions.

What this means for vessel owners

If a motorised vessel exclusion zone is introduced, motorised vessels can still be launched from the designated launch areas. However, they will have to travel at least 200 meters offshore before moving along the coast.

How can the community influence the decision?

  • Have Your Say: We are asking for feedback from the community, water users, beachgoers, vessel owners and other stakeholders. You can share your views through our online survey below.
  • What Can Be Influenced: Your feedback will help us decide if we should proceed with an application to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport for a motorised vessel exclusion zone.
  • What Can’t Be Influenced: Existing exclusion zones already set by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport are outside of our control.

Why your feedback matters

We want to ensure this decision reflects the needs and interests of the whole community, balancing safety and recreation. Your views will help shape whether a new motorised vessel exclusion zone will be implemented in this space.
