At the suggestion of a local resident we considered a formal name for the reserve in Coromandel Valley located on the corner of Avondale Road and McKenzie Street, adjoining Sittella Crescent (refer to the map in the document library).

From 5-30 April 2021 we asked our communities to identify any existing names or suggested names for the reserve. We wrote to residents living near the reserve seeking their input.

We received a number of suggested names, and they were assessed against the criteria outlined in council’s Place Naming Policy. We also considered whether an Aboriginal name may be appropriate for the reserve.

All suitable name options were presented to elected members in a report to Council in July. Council selected 14 names (see here) to progress to the second stage of community engagement.

From 20 August to 20 September 2021 the community voted for their preferred name(s).

We collated the community feedback (votes), and presented it in a report to Council on 16 November 2021 where elected members decided on the formal name for the reserve: Mukarta Patpangka/Oak Tree Reserve. This dual name comes from community suggestions. The Aboriginal (Kaurna) name Mukarta Patpangka (click here to hear the pronunciation) means 'hill in the south' and Oak Tree Reserve reflects the oak trees planted in the reserve by local residents many years ago.

We will arrange a sign for the reserve to display the new name.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this place naming process.
