Aldinga Road section design complete

21 December 2023

The design plans for Section 2 (Aldinga Road) are now complete, subject to final approval from the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT). Minor amendments have been made to the plans following the consultation in May and June this year.

In relation to what we heard through the engagement:

  • Concrete driveway crossovers will be installed at vehicle access points to private properties where they interface with the asphalt shared use path. The colour contrast between the asphalt shared use path and concrete driveways will increase path user awareness of upcoming driveways. Path approaches to driveways will also be reviewed to determine if additional signage is required to reinforce to path users the vehicle crossing points, particularly at start and end points of typical journeys.
  • Road intersections have been reviewed with consideration of the safety concerns raised. Additional traffic safety measures will be installed at the intersections of Aldinga Road / California Road and Aldinga Road / Pethick Road.
  • Road separation for the path will be achieved through concrete, rubble infill and vegetated medians along Aldinga Road within the 80km/hr speed limit areas and separated by a standard concrete kerb within the 60km/hr speed limit area.
  • Within the 80km/hr speed limit area the design has been prepared to achieve a rubble or vegetated median of between 1m and 1.5m width where possible. In some locations this could not be accommodated due to site constraints such as underground infrastructure, existing trees or stormwater requirements etc. and a 0.5m wide concrete kerb separation from the path to the road has been adopted.
  • The alignment of the path has been designed to protect and preserve existing vegetation wherever possible. Some minor tree removal is required at road intersections to meet driver sight distance requirements and some tree pruning is required along the trail corridor. The project will also introduce a number of new trees along the alignment in addition to the sections of vegetated medians.
  • Council is aware of concerns regarding road water runoff along Aldinga Road and the path has been designed with consideration to these concerns.

Construction is expected to commence in early February 2024.
