Engagement outcomes

During the engagement period from 5 to 25 May 2025, 431 people visited this Your Say page. We received 35 responses providing feedback on the interpretive signage and/or town entry signs. The feedback was analysed and a number of themes identified, including:

  • general positive comments regarding the interpretive signage
  • mixed feedback on the town entry sign designs
  • lack of Kaurna/Aboriginal/pre-colonial acknowledgement and/or information.

More detail is provided in the Community Engagement Feedback report.

As a result of the feedback the following changes will be made:

  1. Review the content of the interpretive signs based on feedback on the text and photos.
  2. Revisit the design of the two town entry signs to ensure they are more in keeping with the historic area, and consider how best to include the date range for when Port Willunga was a working port.
  3. Move the Port Road town entry sign to a different location east of Bowering Hill Road.
  4. Move the interpretive sign in Towilla Yerta Reserve from the existing metal frame to a new frame alongside, to allow for the reinstatement of State Government’s Star of Greece sign (was missing).

The community engagement results highlighted the importance of recognising the much longer First Nations history of this area, while celebrating its European heritage. Council is committed to all aspects of the history of place and reflecting these in ways best suited to the context.

In Port Willunga, Aboriginal culture will feature in the Port Willunga North Coast Park (Coastal Trail) project. Various cultural elements are being developed for that project based on direct, ongoing engagement with Traditional Owners. We look forward to delivering that project, including its elements promoting and celebrating the long and continuing connection to Country for Aboriginal people. The Port Willunga historical signage project will focus on the area’s history as a port, in association with the 175-year anniversary of this in 2025.

We anticipate the interpretive signs will be installed in August, and the town entry signs in September/October 2025.
