Update October 2025

Exciting news! The five historical information signs have now been installed - see photos below. The State Government's Star of Greece sign at Towilla Yerta Reserve has also now been reinstated.

Following community engagement, we have finalised the design for the entry signs to the port, incorporating as much of your feedback as possible, including:

  • Removing bright colours and using wood and 'rustic' metal more in keeping with the local historic area
  • Using a single consistent font, and a single colour for the text
  • Removing vertical text
  • Removing reference to a 'working port'
  • Moving the location of the Port Road sign east of Bowering Hill Road.

You can view the final design below.

Comments from our project partner the Port Willunga Heritage Sub-Committee of the National Trust of South Australia (Willunga branch) on the final design included:

  • "The rudder motif is highly relevant for a historic port town, is clever and is contextually appropriate and a meaningful choice for a port town.
  • The wooden posts and weathered aesthetic support the historic and nautical theme well.
  • The brown gradient mimics aged wood or oxidised metal, reinforcing the aged, wooden/nautical vibe, which is appropriate.
  • Design is clean with minimal visual clutter.
  • Message is brief and legible at a moderate distance.
  • The serif typeface gives a classic, historic feel, which suits the theme and is appropriate for the era (1841)."

The two entry signs are now being manufactured and will be installed on Port Road and the Esplanade in the coming months.

Thank you to all of the community members that provided feedback.
